Types of damage

Four types of cracked or chipped teeth

Fractured cusp

Break in the chewing surface at the raised points. Usually repaired with a crown.

Cracked tooth (treatable)

Crack reaches into the tooth but the structure is intact. Often repaired with filling, bonding or crown.

Cracked tooth (non-treatable)

Crack extends below the gum line or into the root. May need extraction.

Split tooth

A complete vertical break. Most severe — usually requires extraction and replacement.

Common causes

How chips and cracks happen

Accidents & trauma

Falls, sports collisions, vehicle accidents. Even small impacts — chipping a tooth on a glass bottle.

Hard foods

Boiled sweets, popcorn kernels, ice cubes. Habitual hard chewing damages enamel over time.

Teeth grinding

Long-term bruxism develops chips and cracks. A night splint protects the teeth — more on teeth grinding.

Old fillings

Previously filled or restored teeth chip more easily than natural enamel. Replacing aging fillings keeps the tooth strong.

Symptoms — how to tell if a tooth is chipped or cracked

  • Tooth sensitivity to hot or cold
  • Sensitivity when chewing or grinding teeth
  • Unexpected tooth pain
  • Surface roughness or irregular areas you can feel with your tongue

Treatment options

Filling or bonding

For minor chips. Tooth-coloured resin matched to your enamel, hardened with UV light. Quick and well-tolerated.

Dental veneers

For visible chips on front teeth. Thin porcelain shell covers the front surface — see our veneers page for detail.

Dental crowns

For badly chipped or fractured teeth. Caps the entire tooth above the gum line — see our crowns page.

Root canal first

If the pulp is exposed by the chip, a root canal stops the infection before the crown is placed.

Extraction (last resort)

Very rare for chips — only when the tooth structure is completely unsalvageable. We always try to save the tooth first.

The right choice

Depends on the size and location of the damage and whether the pulp is involved. We assess at consultation and explain options before any work.

Chipped tooth questions, answered

How can I tell if I have a cracked or chipped tooth?

Sharp roughness on a tooth you can feel with your tongue. Tooth sensitivity to temperature or pressure. Unexplained tooth pain. Visible damage in the mirror.

Why does my tooth hurt after chipping it?

Damage to the surface exposes and irritates the pulp — the inner layer with nerves and blood vessels. Increased sensitivity to temperature or chewing is normal until the tooth is restored.

Do I have to see a dentist if I cracked or chipped my tooth?

Yes. Untreated chips trap bacteria and increase the risk of cavities. Even small damage benefits from professional evaluation — we can stop the problem before it gets worse.

Are chipped-tooth treatments permanent?

Most restorations are semi-permanent and last many years. A restored tooth is never as strong as the original — take care with hard foods.

Will I lose my tooth if it's cracked?

Full extraction is only used in very severe cases where the tooth structure is unsalvageable by other means. We always try to save the tooth first with bonding, veneers, crowns or root canal.

How can I prevent chips and cracks?

Avoid biting hard foods. Don't use your teeth to open bottles or hold objects. Wear proper sports mouthguards for impact sports. Wear a splint at night if you grind your teeth.
