Seven things behind most toothache in Perth
Tooth pain isn't random — there's almost always a specific cause, and identifying it is the first step to treating it. Here are the most common we see:
- Tooth decayBacteria destroying layers of the tooth, eventually exposing nerves and causing pain.
- Tooth abscessPus trapped inside the tooth pulp — a sign of severe infection that needs urgent treatment.
- Cracked toothEspecially painful when chewing. Needs repair quickly to prevent tooth loss.
- Impacted wisdom toothAn erupting or stuck wisdom tooth causing pressure, jaw pain and crowding.
- Gum diseaseBacterial infection of the gums, can cause bleeding, recession and tooth pain.
- PulpitisInflammation of the tooth's inner pulp — creates pressure and intense, often throbbing pain.
- SinusitisPressure in upper sinuses can transfer to the upper teeth and feel like tooth pain.
Common dental conditions
Tooth decay
Diagnosed early, decay is straightforward to treat. Caught late, it leads to fillings, root canal, or extraction. Regular check-ups catch it before pain starts.
Tooth decay →Chipped & cracked teeth
From a small chip to a serious break, we'll stabilise the tooth, check for nerve involvement, and rebuild it with composite, a crown, or other restorative work.
Chipped & cracked →Missing teeth
Replace one tooth or several with implants, bridges or dentures. We'll explain the options based on what's right for your bite, your timeline and your budget.
Missing teeth →Jaw pain
From grinding, TMJ issues, infection or wisdom teeth. We assess the cause and treat or refer accordingly — including night guards for bruxism.

Tooth pain & conditions — answered
Can tooth pain go away without treatment?
It's highly unlikely. Tooth pain almost always signals an underlying problem — decay, infection, cracked tooth, gum disease — that won't resolve on its own. Painkillers mask it; treatment fixes it.
What's the fastest way to relieve tooth pain at home?
Rinse with warm salt water, take over-the-counter pain relief as directed, apply a cold pack to the outside of the cheek, and avoid very hot, cold or sugary food. These help in the meantime — you still need to see a dentist.
When is tooth pain a dental emergency?
Severe or worsening pain, swelling, bleeding that won't stop, fever, or pain that's stopping you sleeping or functioning is best treated as an emergency. Call (08) 9020 7222 and we'll triage you.
Why does tooth pain feel worse at night?
Lying down increases blood flow to the head, which puts more pressure on inflamed tooth nerves. Elevating your head when sleeping and using a cold compress can help — but if pain is keeping you awake, see us soon.
My gums are swelling but they don't hurt. Should I be worried?
Yes — gum swelling without obvious pain can be an early sign of gum disease, which is often symptom-free until it's advanced. Book in for a check.
How long does it take to recover after treatment?
Depends on the treatment. A simple filling — you can usually eat normally within a few hours. A surgical extraction or root canal — several days of careful eating and good aftercare. We'll explain what to expect for whatever you have done.

How long can tooth pain last?
Untreated tooth pain doesn't usually go away on its own. It might temporarily ease — particularly if the nerve dies after prolonged infection — but the underlying problem stays and often worsens. Severe pain that lasts more than a day or two should be treated as a dental emergency.
Treating tooth pain in Perth
Most tooth pain has an identifiable cause: decay, infection, a cracked tooth, gum disease, or wisdom teeth. The treatment matches the cause — a filling for decay, a root canal or extraction for infection, repair or crown for a crack, gum disease treatment, or wisdom tooth removal. We diagnose at your first visit and explain the options before treating.
When to seek emergency care
Call us straight away if you have: severe pain that's stopping you sleeping or functioning, swelling in your face or jaw, fever alongside dental pain, a knocked-out adult tooth, or bleeding that won't stop. We keep emergency slots open every day for situations like these.
Tooth pain in children
Children's tooth pain follows similar causes to adults — decay being the most common. If your child is in pain, call us. We'll examine, diagnose, and treat at a pace that suits them. Children's emergency appointments are handled the same way as adults — same-day where availability allows.
