Dental crowns in Perth — natural-looking, custom-made

A crown is a cap that covers a damaged tooth — restoring strength, shape and appearance. We work with an experienced Lab Technician to colour-match and shape each crown for a result that blends in.

Custom-made crowns

Quoted after assessment

Cost depends on material (porcelain, ceramic, gold alloy or porcelain-fused-to-metal) and the tooth being restored

Pricing varies with material choice, lab technician work and complexity. We assess the tooth and quote in writing before starting.

What is a dental crown?

A cap that covers and protects a damaged tooth

A crown is both cosmetic and restorative — it covers signs of decay, damage or large fillings, reinforces the tooth underneath, and is made to resemble your existing teeth in colour, shape and texture. With an experienced dentist and Lab Technician at My Emergency Dentist, the result can go unnoticed.

To get the most ideal fit for your mouth, your dentist takes an impression using a clay-like material to match your bite. From that impression, a mould is created and your custom dental crown is made.

Materials we use

Choose the right crown material for the tooth

Porcelain (ceramic)

Best aesthetic match for front teeth. Closely mimics natural enamel and is easily colour-matched to your existing teeth. The standard choice for visible cosmetic work.

Porcelain fused to gold

Combines porcelain's appearance with gold's durability. A reliable choice for teeth that need both strength and a natural look.

Gold alloy

Highly durable but more visible — usually reserved for molars at the back where strength matters more than appearance.

Base metal alloy

Strong, resistant to corrosion. Used in specific clinical situations — we'll explain when this might be the right choice.

New materials are developed regularly — if a newer option suits your case better, your dentist will explain why.

How long does a crown take to make?

About two weeks. We fit a temporary crown to protect the tooth while your permanent crown is being made in the lab. At your second appointment, we fit the permanent crown and check the bite.

How long will it last?

With proper care, dental crowns typically last around 15 years. If you grind your teeth at night, we recommend a splint to protect the crown. To extend lifespan:

  • Don't chew ice cubes
  • Don't grind or clench your teeth repeatedly
  • Don't bite or chew on hard objects
  • Brush and floss as normal — crowns need the same care as natural teeth

When are crowns used?

Crowns are used after a root canal to protect the rehabilitated tooth, to cover large fillings, to repair chipped or cracked teeth, or to restore badly decayed teeth where a filling alone isn't enough.

Dental crown questions, answered

Can you get a crown without a root canal?

Yes — a crown is sometimes placed without a root canal to protect a heavily filled or worn tooth. However, if the tooth later becomes decayed or infected, a root canal may be needed afterwards.

How do you care for dental crowns?

Same as natural teeth — brush twice a day, floss daily. Avoid chewing ice, grinding, and biting hard objects. If you grind your teeth at night, wear a splint to protect the crown.

What's the difference between porcelain and ceramic crowns?

They're essentially the same material category — both are ceramic. "Porcelain crowns" is the common term. Some are 100% porcelain (best aesthetics, suited to front teeth) and some are porcelain fused to a metal core (more durable, suited to molars).

Will a crown look natural?

Yes — our Lab Technician colour-matches and shapes each crown to your existing teeth so it blends in. We can show you the shade match before bonding the crown so you can confirm it looks right.

Are crowns covered by health funds?

Most major Australian health funds offer some cover for crowns under extras cover. We're preferred providers for HBF, Bupa, Medibank, HCF, NIB, CBHS and Smile.com.au, and we'll process the claim on the spot — you pay just the gap.
