Common reasons for an emergency root canal in Perth

Nerve damage

From trauma, deep decay, or repeated dental work that has irritated the pulp.

Abscess

Tooth is painful to touch, you can't bite or chew, and infection is spreading. An abscess is a dental emergency.

Severe sensitivity

Long-lasting reaction to hot or cold long after the stimulus is removed — a sign the nerve is dying.

Before a crown or bridge

If shaping the tooth for restorative work exposes the nerve, a root canal is needed first to prevent later pain.

Other warning signs: severe pain unresponsive to over-the-counter relief, swelling of the gum, a bump on the gum, or visible tooth discoloration. If any of these apply, call us on (08) 9020 7222.

How an emergency root canal works in Perth

What happens during the procedure

  1. X-ray. We assess the root canal shape and any infection in the surrounding bone.
  2. Anaesthetic + rubber dam. Local anaesthetic numbs the area; a rubber dam keeps the tooth dry and clean.
  3. Access + clean. The tooth is opened, the pulp removed along with bacteria and debris. Endodontic files clean and shape the canal; sodium hypochlorite flushes it.
  4. Seal. The canal is sealed with a paste and rubber compound. A filling is fitted to the outside.
  5. Crown (often). Depending on how much tooth structure is left, a crown may be recommended to protect the tooth long-term.

If there's active infection, the dentist may apply medication and seal the tooth permanently at a second appointment.

Why save the tooth instead of extracting?

Root canal treatment lets you keep your natural tooth — it stays in place for chewing, alignment and appearance, with the dead nerve removed so the pain stops. Modern root canals reliably save teeth when followed up with appropriate restoration (a crown or filling).

Pain stops

The infected nerve is the source of the pain. Once it's removed, the pain goes too.

Natural tooth preserved

Better for chewing, jaw alignment and bone health than extraction + replacement.

Saves money long-term

Usually cheaper than extraction + implant or bridge, and preserves the surrounding teeth.

Root canal questions, answered

How painful is a root canal procedure?

The procedure itself is not generally painful — local anaesthetic numbs the tooth throughout. There may be mild discomfort and swelling for a few days afterwards. Root canal treatment usually relieves the severe pain people arrive with.

How much does a root canal cost in Perth?

Front tooth from $750. Back tooth from $1,500. A crown is often recommended afterwards to protect the treated tooth and is quoted separately. Pricing varies with complexity, number of canals and materials — we confirm in writing before treatment.

How long does a root canal take?

After the initial consultation and x-rays, the actual procedure typically takes 30 to 90 minutes depending on which tooth and how many canals it has. Complex cases may need a second appointment.

How long is recovery from a root canal?

Usually a few days of slight inflammation, mild discomfort or a dull ache near the site. If pain returns or worsens after the first week, contact us — it may signal a returning infection that needs attention.

What are the side effects?

The main risk is the return of an infection from undetected fractures or incomplete cleaning, treated with medication or a repeat procedure. Root canal treatment has a strong record of saving teeth when performed correctly and followed up with appropriate restoration.

Can my dentist refer me to an endodontist?

Yes. For complex cases — unusual root anatomy, retreatment of a previous root canal, or significant patient anxiety — referral to a endodontist may be appropriate. We discuss this with you if it applies.
