The three most common causes
Periodontal disease
The #1 cause of tooth loss in adults over 35. Bacterial infection of the gums causes teeth to loosen and fall out if untreated. More on gum disease.
Poor oral hygiene + decay
Excessive sugar and acid lead to tooth decay. If decay reaches the nerve and isn't treatable, the tooth may need extraction.
Traumatic injury
Sports, accidents or general injuries. Teeth grinding can also stress teeth, loosening connective tissue.
Why missing teeth matter
Teeth aren't just for chewing — they hold the jaw and surrounding teeth in place, support facial structure and help with speech.
Bone loss
The jawbone relies on tooth roots to maintain density. When a tooth is missing, the bone in that area can degenerate.
Facial change
Bone loss affects the aesthetics of the face, often making people look older.
Quality of life
Missing teeth impact your ability to chew properly, affecting general health and nutrition.
Three treatment options
Bridges
A dental bridge replaces the gap using the adjacent teeth as attachment points. The healthy teeth on either side are filed down to posts, then the bridge is cemented in place.
Pros: Long-lasting if cared for, restores the gap, supports remaining teeth. Cons: Requires healthy adjacent teeth. If those teeth decay, the whole bridge may need replacing.
Dentures
Specially fitted false teeth that replace missing teeth. Removable — they sit on top of the gums. Full dentures replace all teeth in a jaw; partial dentures replace some, secured by metal clasps. More on dentures.
Pros: Cheaper than implants. Removable for cleaning. Restore appearance, chewing, speaking. Cons: Take a few weeks to adjust to. Need readjustment over time as gums change.
Dental implants
A titanium post is surgically placed into the jaw to replace the tooth root, then an artificial tooth is fitted on top. Unlike dentures, implants are not removable. More on implants.
Pros: Longest-lasting solution. Doesn't affect adjacent teeth. Acts like a natural tooth. Cons: Surgical procedure required. Higher upfront cost. Takes months from start to finished tooth.

Which option is right for me — bridge, denture or implant?
Depends on how many teeth are missing, the condition of the surrounding teeth and bone, your budget and your preferences. We assess and explain the trade-offs at a consultation.
How long does each option last?
Bridges: 10-15+ years with care. Dentures: 5-7 years before replacement. Implants: typically a lifetime with proper care.
Is the implant procedure painful?
Local anaesthetic is used during the surgical placement of the post — the procedure itself isn't painful. There can be discomfort and swelling afterwards, controlled with prescribed pain relief.
Are missing teeth covered by health funds?
Many private health funds offer cover for bridges, dentures and implants under extras cover. We're preferred providers for HBF, Bupa, Medibank, HCF, NIB, CBHS and Smile.com.au and can claim on the spot.
How long does the implant process take?
Typically 3-6 months total — the bone needs to integrate with the titanium post before the artificial tooth can be attached. Worth the wait for a permanent solution.
Can a single missing tooth be replaced?
Yes — by a single-tooth implant, a small bridge, or a partial denture. We'll explain which suits the gap.
