What are dental veneers?

Thin shells bonded to the front of your teeth

Veneers cover the front surface of your teeth — typically made from porcelain or composite resin. They resist stains, mimic the light-reflective properties of real enamel, and are made to match your existing teeth.

Common reasons for veneers:

  • Cover problem or discoloured teeth
  • Close gaps between teeth
  • Cover broken, chipped or worn teeth
  • Improve the look of irregularly shaped, misaligned or uneven teeth

What composite bonding can do

Repair chips

A chipped front tooth — sports, accidents, biting hard food. Bonding reshapes the tooth with composite that matches your natural enamel.

Close small gaps

Small spaces between front teeth (diastema) closed by adding composite to the sides of the teeth. Less invasive than veneers for minor gaps.

Mask minor discolouration

For isolated stained spots that don't respond to whitening, composite can cover them.

Reshape uneven teeth

Smooth out slightly worn, jagged or misshapen edges of front teeth without crowns or veneers.

Cover exposed roots

Where gum recession exposes a darker root surface, composite can protect and conceal it.

Trial run for veneers

If you're considering veneers, composite bonding can preview the shape and shade before committing to porcelain.

How it compares

Composite bonding vs veneers vs crowns

Composite bonding

From $199 per tooth. One visit. No drilling for most cases. Reversible. Lasts 4-8 years. Best for small chips, gaps, minor reshaping.

Porcelain veneers

From $1,500 per tooth. Two visits. Small amount of enamel removed. Lasts 20-25 years. Best for multiple teeth, larger transformations, longer-term result.

Dental crowns

Quoted after consultation. Two visits. More tooth structure removed. Lasts ~15 years. Best for badly damaged or weakened teeth, not just cosmetic.

How does bonding actually work?

  1. Shade selection. We match composite to your tooth colour.
  2. Surface preparation. A mild acid gel slightly roughens the tooth so the composite bonds. No drilling for most cases.
  3. Bonding agent. A thin liquid is brushed on, then cured under blue light.
  4. Composite applied. The composite is shaped in layers, with each layer cured under blue light. The dentist shapes it to match the surrounding teeth.
  5. Polish. The final composite is smoothed and polished so it reflects light like natural enamel.

Most jobs take 30-60 minutes per tooth in a single visit.

Bonding questions, answered

How long does composite bonding last?

4-8 years with good care. Some patients get longer; some less. Composite is more prone to staining and chipping than porcelain veneers, so avoid biting nails, chewing pen lids, or opening packaging with your teeth.

Does composite bonding stain?

Composite can pick up stains from coffee, tea, red wine and smoking — more so than natural enamel or porcelain. Maintain good oral hygiene and avoid excessive staining substances for longest-lasting result.

Is it reversible?

Largely yes — composite bonding doesn't usually require enamel removal, so the underlying tooth stays intact. If you later want veneers or crowns instead, bonding can be removed.

Will my health fund cover composite bonding?

Many private health funds cover composite bonding under extras cover — coverage varies. We're preferred providers for the major funds and can claim on the spot. We'll check your cover at consultation.

How does composite bonding compare to veneers?

Composite bonding is faster (one visit), cheaper (from $199 vs from $1,500), and reversible. Veneers last longer (up to 20-25 years vs 4-8 for bonding) and resist stains better. Best for different situations — we'll recommend the right option for your case.
