Fixing dentures that are damaged or no longer fit
A denture repair is essentially fixing your dentures when they're damaged or no longer fit properly. Over time, dentures develop chips, cracks and loose fittings as your gums naturally change shape. The good news — most repairs can be done on the spot while you wait, so you can get back to your day without unnecessary delays.
Three common repair types
Relining
The soft inner lining is replaced or adjusted to improve the fit. Over time your gums naturally change shape, causing dentures to become loose and uncomfortable. A reline adds new material to the lining, restoring snugness.
Rebasing
If the entire base is cracked, broken or needs significant reshaping. Replaces the whole baseplate with new material — essentially giving your dentures a new foundation.
Tooth repair
When individual teeth chip, crack or fall out. Bonded back on or replaced with a new tooth by the dental technician.
Signs your dentures need emergency repair
Physical damage
- Cracks or fractures — can cause sharp edges that irritate your gums or break further, with swallowing and breathing risks
- Broken clasps or attachments — make dentures slip or dislodge, affecting eating, speaking and confidence
- Loose or dislodged teeth — from wear, tear or improper cleaning. Uncomfortable and affects chewing
Discomfort and functionality
- Pain or sores from ill-fitting or damaged dentures
- Difficulty chewing or speaking clearly
- Changes in facial appearance as muscles strain to compensate
Additional red flags
- Persistent gum bleeding — requires professional evaluation
- Loss of taste or smell — in rare cases, poorly fitting dentures irritate nerves
- Fever or facial swelling — can indicate a serious infection requiring immediate attention

DirectionsDenture repair questions, answered
How quickly can a denture be repaired?
Most denture repairs are completed within an hour while you wait. Complex rebasing or new prosthetics may take longer — we'll tell you upfront.
Does dental insurance cover denture repairs?
Many insurance plans cover denture repairs. We're preferred providers for the major Australian health funds and can navigate the process with you. We also have flexible payment plans — ask about financing options.
What if I can't make it to the clinic immediately?
Call us to discuss your situation. We'll do our best to accommodate you and guide you on temporary measures until you can get in.
How can I avoid damaging my dentures?
Adopt proper cleaning habits and avoid hard foods. Remove only over a soft surface (towel or sink with water) so they don't break if dropped. Soak overnight in cold water with mild cleaning solution — not bleach.
How can I tell if my dentures need readjusting?
Chips in the dentures, difficulty chewing after the two-week acclimatisation, a changing fit, pressure sores on your gums, speech pattern changes, or bad breath. Any of these — book a check.
How often should I see my dentist to readjust my dentures?
Every 6 months for a general teeth cleaning and check — your dentist can evaluate the denture fit at the same time.
