Why wisdom teeth need removal

What are wisdom teeth — and when do they need to come out?

Wisdom teeth are the third set of molars at the back of your mouth. They usually appear in young adulthood. Because they're so far back, they're hard to clean and prone to decay, infection and crowding — which is why many people need them removed.

Impacted

Trapped beneath the gum or jawbone, causing pressure, pain and recurring infection.

Crowding

Pushing against neighbouring teeth, causing misalignment and additional pain.

Decay or infection

Hard-to-reach position means brushing isn't enough — bacteria build up and inflame the gum.

Signs you may need wisdom teeth removed in Perth

  • Pain or tenderness at the back of the mouth or jaw
  • Redness or swelling of the gum behind the second molar
  • Bad breath or a bad taste in your mouth
  • Cysts (pockets of fluid) around the gum line
  • Jaw pain or pressure on neighbouring teeth

A full examination and x-ray are needed to confirm — call us on (08) 9020 7222 if any of these sound familiar.

Three ways we keep you comfortable

We'll discuss the right option for you based on the complexity of the case and your anxiety. You won't be expected to choose alone.

Local anaesthetic

An injection numbs the area. You stay awake while the area is numbed. Suitable for straightforward extractions where you're comfortable being aware of the procedure.

IV sedation (twilight)

Sedative drugs through an IV line put you in a deeply relaxed state. Most patients don't remember the procedure afterwards. Useful for more complex cases or anxious patients.

General anaesthetic

You're fully unconscious for the procedure. Reserved for complex cases or significant dental anxiety. Discussed and arranged in advance.

How long does wisdom teeth removal take?

Anywhere between 10 and 30 minutes per tooth, depending on complexity. After anaesthesia, the dentist widens the socket and gently loosens the tooth before removing it. Stitches close the gum if needed.

Recovery — what to expect

Most people recover within 3-4 days. Mild swelling and discomfort can last several days; full healing takes about a month. The first 24 hours matter most.

Do

  • Drink plenty of fluids
  • Ice pack on the cheek for swelling
  • Moist heat for a sore jaw
  • Take prescribed medications
  • Rest for the first day

Avoid

  • Drinking through a straw
  • Hard or crunchy food
  • Sticky food
  • Smoking
  • Brushing the site on day one

Watch for

  • Dry socket (severe pain after the blood clot dislodges)
  • Fever or chills
  • Open sores
  • Pain that worsens after day three

If any of these appear, call us.

Wisdom teeth questions, answered

What are the sedation options for wisdom teeth removal?

Three options: local anaesthetic (you stay awake, area is numbed), IV sedation (twilight — deeply relaxed, often no memory of the procedure), and general anaesthetic (fully unconscious, reserved for complex cases or significant anxiety). We discuss the right option for you before booking.

How much does wisdom teeth removal cost in Perth?

Indicative pricing: $399 to remove a single wisdom tooth, $1,400 for all four. Final cost depends on the complexity, your medical condition and materials used. We quote in writing before any work begins.

What are the possible risks of wisdom teeth removal?

Infection (manage with good oral hygiene post-op), dry socket (when the blood clot dislodges — follow post-op instructions to prevent), and rarely, nerve damage during lower wisdom tooth removal. We minimise these risks with thorough x-ray planning and careful technique.

What does the recovery process look like?

Swelling and mild discomfort for several days, controlled with ice packs and prescribed pain relief. Some bleeding is normal — gauze pads control it. Soft diet for the first few days. Most people are back to normal within 3-4 days, with full healing in about a month.

Can I have my wisdom teeth removed under the $349 first emergency visit?

No — wisdom tooth removal is excluded from the $349 first emergency visit price. Wisdom teeth are quoted separately ($399 per tooth, $1,400 for all four) because the complexity varies significantly case to case. We quote in writing before booking the procedure.
