Three types of tooth extraction
The right approach depends on the tooth, its position and the reason for removal. We discuss this with you before treatment begins.
Simple extraction
The most common form. A local anaesthetic numbs the area, then the dentist removes the tooth in one piece with forceps. Used for visible, accessible teeth.
Sectional extraction
Performed on molars with multiple roots. The dentist separates the roots first, then removes them individually before extracting the rest of the tooth.
Surgical extraction
For impacted teeth (not fully visible). Usually under general anaesthetic. The gum is opened, the tooth is loosened and removed, then closed with dissolvable stitches. An advanced technique done by experienced dentists.
Common reasons for tooth extraction in Perth
Damage
Trauma or decay beyond what a filling, crown or root canal can save.
Crowding
Removed to make room for orthodontic alignment or to relieve overcrowded teeth.
Infection
When decay has exposed the pulp and bacterial infection threatens nearby teeth or bone.
Preparation
Sometimes needed before orthodontic work, chemotherapy or radiation therapy.
Non-functioning teeth
A tooth in a position that's damaging overall oral health may need preventive removal.
Wisdom teeth
Impacted or symptomatic wisdom teeth — see our dedicated wisdom teeth page for pricing and detail.
After your extraction — what to do at home
Post-care is the biggest factor in a smooth recovery. The clot in the socket protects the bone and nerves — don't dislodge it. Full healing takes about a fortnight.
Do
- Take prescribed painkillers
- Chew on gauze for 3-4 hours post-op
- Icepack 10 minutes at a time for swelling
- Rest for 24 hours, no strenuous work for 2 days
- Salt-water rinse after 24 hours
- Sleep propped up on a pillow
Avoid
- Spitting or rinsing vigorously day one
- Smoking through the recovery period
- Drinking through a straw
- Hot food day one
- Hard or crunchy food for two weeks
- Vigorous brushing near the site
Watch for dry socket
If you feel sharp, throbbing pain a few days after extraction, the blood clot may have dislodged. Call us — it's treatable but needs attention.

How much does a tooth extraction cost in Perth?
An emergency dental visit including a non-surgical extraction is from $299. Surgical extractions (impacted teeth) and wisdom teeth are quoted separately based on complexity. We confirm pricing in writing before any work begins.
Will I be able to drive myself home?
Yes if you have a local anaesthetic. No if you have a general anaesthetic — you'll need someone to drive you home and stay with you for a few hours. Sedation cases need a carer arranged in advance.
Is tooth extraction covered by Medicare?
Medicare does not cover most dental examinations. Some children may be eligible under the Child Dental Benefit Schedule. Many private health funds cover extractions to varying extents — we're preferred providers for the major funds and can claim on the spot.
How long will the swelling from the surgery last?
It varies. The worst usually passes by day two, but mild swelling can continue for a week. Ice packs in the first 24 hours and warm compresses after that help reduce it.
Can a child have a tooth extracted?
Yes — extraction is generally safe for children, but each case is different. We discuss with you whether removing a baby tooth is necessary, since baby teeth usually fall out naturally. Call us to discuss your child's situation.
What if I'm in significant pain after surgery?
Contact us. It's likely you have dry socket, which is treatable. Stick to the painkillers we've prescribed until we vary the advice. Don't try to manage severe post-op pain alone.
